Comprehensive History of Matheson

Matheson is an award-winning, nationally recognized US Mail carrier that hauls, handles, and sorts the mail for the United States Postal Service. While today we employ over 2,000 people across the country to assist the USPS to get the mail where it needs to go on time, we started out a long time ago with a small family, one water truck, and a dream of building something lasting in rural Northern California in the early 60s.

Robert Browning Matheson, Brownie to his friends and family, was a young man working in the farming and ranching industry while supporting his wife, Carole, and young son, Mark. In 1964, he acquired a water truck and began getting contracts in and around construction sites in the developing area of Clayton, California. He soon realized that this business was good, but only seasonal. He started looking for steadier transportation work. In just a year, he learned of a member in his community who was retiring and giving up his USPS mail contract. Brownie was able to win this single Highway Contract Route and Matheson Postal Services was founded.

Over the years, Brownie and Carole worked hard to build the business to the level where Matheson became a go-to contractor for the Postal Service. Mark was ten years old when they started, and always knew he wanted to be in business. He started out by sweeping the shop, and gradually moved up to management. In 1993 Matheson moved its headquarters to the Sacramento area where Brownie, Carole, and Mark (now a husband and father of two) continued to expand the business from highway routes and shuttle work to include terminal material handling services and sorting facilities for the Postal Service.

Today, we are nationwide, nationally ranked, and remain family owned and operated. Mark, now President and CEO of all three Matheson companies, works with his two grown children and a team of executives that are committed to serving their customer well and making Matheson a wonderful place for people of all backgrounds to work. It truly takes a village to keep Matheson moving forward and we are always looking for team oriented, proactive, dedicated team members. We employ truck drivers, diesel technicians, warehouse material handlers, recruiters, accountants, contract specialists, and more. The work our team members do is important and their commitment to our core values of Respect, Integrity, Collaboration, and Excellence ensures that the mail is delivered safely and on time.
